The Mineral Resources and Energy Minister of South Africa has gazetted amendments to the electricity regulations for new electricity generation capacity, opening the way for “municipalities in good financial standing to develop their own power generation projects”.

This is in-line with the President’s priorities of rapid expansion of energy generation capacity as a top priority.

The amendments extend the procurement of new renewables, cogeneration, baseload, mid-merit, peak load, energy storage and cross-border generation capacity to organs of State “active in the energy sector”, which includes municipalities.

Municipalities now have to adapt to the changing regulatory environment.

The “Municipality Resilience: What does the municipality of the future look like in a changing regulatory environment?” webinar, sets to unpack and navigate the changing regulatory landscape in South Africa. With key stakeholders in the industry value chain (municipalities, IPPs, utilities ect.), the webinar will address major focus areas:

  • What does it mean to be a municipality today and is it a sustainable in a post-COVID world?
  • How will municipalities engage with key stakeholders?
  • What does sustainable engagement with IPPs look like?
  • Hybrid structure of municipalities, is it feasible in a South African context?
  • The role of PPP in the municipal structure
  • Unpacking and understanding Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) in the context of municipalities
